This is the second article from the E-Commerce series (the first one is here). Today you will learn why it could be vital to your business to have both physical location and an online e-shop, what you should know before you plan your launch and what’s next.

If you are dreaming of having an online store but you are not sure where to start, you are in the right place. This month I am going to have a series of articles on how to start and run E-commerce. The first interview will focus on creating an online store.
Krissy Crawford is the founder of Uncommon Ground, an online shoe store for women’s larger size shoes. As a size 11 shoe herself, she decided to turn her shoe shopping frustrations into a business she is passionate about (and an ever expanding shoe wardrobe). She was a finalist in the Nokia In Hindsight small business competition. Krissy summarised the lessons she learned while setting up Uncommon Ground.

It has been a while since I wanted to launch my own venture, a cosmetics review website Holy Grail in Beauty. Instead I was very unlucky to hire the developer who not only damaged my reputation but also hurt financially, not mentioning emotional stress of going through legal case….
I signed the contract with Macquarie IT (Abhijit Singh) in August 2010 for what had meant to be a 2 month project. It turned out to be a 13 months nightmare that ended up in September 2011 with the money orders on Macquarie IT from Consumer, Trader & Tenancy Tribunal. The reasoning of the tribunal was the failure of Macquarie IT to produce the website in accordance with the agreement within the reasonable time frame and that the work provided has not been performed in a workmanlike manner. Read my story and learn the lesson.

This was another time when I came back from Women as Entrepreneur event completely inspired, believing that I can change the world! Make it better. Step by step.
The entire event was spectacular. I had an opportunity to chat with Catriona Pollard, the owner of CP Communications and cofounder of Social Media Women. I was moved by the video of an Indian woman who built her family business in India and gained material independence. I was inspired by the story of Nicole Kersh, the owner of 4Cabling who started her business at 21. Proving your credibility while being very young is a tricky task to do!

I found my passion in beauty ever since I noticed my first fine line around my eyes two years ago. It was at the time when I was working as a business analyst in the mining industry. I couldn’t have my job and passion disconnected more! I talked to many friends and recruiters about my chances of moving into the beauty industry but they all were doubtful about my success.
It was not surprising as this is a very attractive and competitive industry. Recruiters say that someone with experience in this field will always have the advantage. LVMH and Estee Lauder didn’t find my resume interesting enough to invite me for an interview and a friend from Unilever explained that to get a position of a business analyst or other commercial/accountant role, the employee needs to grow from a junior role within the company. That was not an attractive offer for an ambitious qualified accountant with 9 years’ experience in roles like financial controller or project manager. But here I am in the centre of beauty industry working for one of the most influential women in the Australian cosmetics market.

What a stimulating evening!
I was invited today to the event organized by Orsi Parkanyi from Women as Entrepreneurs. The event attracted 80 business or aspiring women and what’s the most exciting, the majority of women were so young, around 30ties. Amazing. Australia is in good hands!
The guest speakers for the night were Jane Lu, the owner of the Show Pony, fashion online store, and Samantha Cran , CEO of the non-for-profit organization 1disease.org. Girls were sharing their experiences, both failures and successes. I made a few notes that I thought were worth remembering and sharing.
It’s been a while since I read this book and I remember how much fun I had reading it together with my girlfriends on a girly weekend away. That memory was while ago now all my girlfriends are busy with engagements and babies. Yay.
